Posted by in News & Tech, Stories

The busy university tourist town of Aberystwyth now has its own mobile app.  The AberApp has been put together by Advancing Aberystwyth Ar Y Blaen, a business led organisation set up to manage the Business Improvement District for Aberystwyth.

The app appeals to everyone –  tourists, locals and students alike as it offers a variety of engaging content including cultural, business, tourist and recreational information. Visitors for example, are encouraged to download the app before their visit to the town, to help plan their itinerary. They can then use it again during their stay to find things to do, take a historical trail and get discounts in local shops and restaurants.

All app content is GPS driven, so content is displayed in order of location, with the nearest information being most prominent.  No matter where a users is in the town, they can easily find ‘what’s nearby’. The app includes;

  • Discount Card for local shops
  • Places to Shop/eat/visit/stay listed by location
  • Town Historical Trail (using GPS positioning)
  • Women’s Heritage Trail (using GPS positioning)
  • GPS & iBeacon Pub Quiz
  • Events Calendar
  • Themed ‘Virtual Postcards’
  • Collection of 360° Panorama Photos
  • Photo Gallery
  • Before/After Historical Photos

Discount Card & What’s On Calendar

Aber has some amazing shops – from high-street favourites to quirky boutiques – and the app can be used to get money off in some of the best shops and restaurants. To get the digital card, visitors/residents/students simply need to install the app on their smartphone or tablet, then show the digital card to any participating stores. Users can also keep up-to-date on local events by using the ‘What’s On’ calendar, and allowing notifications on forthcoming events.

Digital Postcards

A set of Aber-themed photo frames let users share their visit to the town . They can take a snap to remember then share it from their camera roll with family and friends – visitors are encouraged to share using the hashtag #faberystwyth!

Car Park Timer

App users needn’t get caught out when busy shopping in the town centre! Visitors and residents can use the app not only locate a car park in town, but to also set a reminder for when their ticket expires. The clever app knows exactly which car park they are in (using GPS) and knows how long they have left!  It will send you a notification when you’re time’s nearly up!

Pub Quiz Treasure Hunt

One for the students and young at heart – but over 18, of course!  This themed scavenger hunt encourages users to identify a pub, visit the pub, and then answer the pub-related trivia questions. The trail includes 6 of Aber’s finest pubs and bars, and an exclusive pub-crawl selfie frame is awarded to anyone who finishes the crawl. The trail is powered by both GPS and iBeacons.
